Petrol is Optional: Why the JAECOO J7 SHS and OMODA C9 SHS are Changing the Game
South African fuel prices have turned what used to be an inconvenience into a real financial drain and the question for anyone driving regularly is no longer whether to consider a plug-in hybrid. It's which one.
At Melrose Arch we have two that make that decision easy for you. The JAECOO J7 SHS and the OMODA C9 SHS are built for different buyers, but they share the same outcome: significantly less time and money spent at the petrol station. Here are five reasons why.
1. Your daily commute could cost you almost nothing
The JAECOO J7 SHS carries an 18.3 kWh battery for up to 90 km of pure electric range. The average South African commute is just under 60 km, charge it overnight and most weekdays you drive without touching the fuel tank. The OMODA C9 SHS goes further: up to 150 km on a single charge, which covers two full days of city driving for most people. When the battery eventually runs down on either car, the petrol engine takes over without a hiccup. No interruption, no range anxiety.
2. Impressive range means you stop planning around fuel stops
Battery and tank combined, the JAECOO J7 SHS delivers over 1 200 km of range at 4.7 L/100 km once you switch to hybrid mode. The OMODA C9 SHS claims over 1 100 km — road tests in South Africa have consistently returned around 6.9 L/100 km under mixed driving conditions. Cape Town to Johannesburg becomes just about doable without stopping! Efficiency and performance in the same stylish package.
The J7 SHS puts out 255 kW and 525 Nm of torque through a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission that automatically cycles between Full Electric, Series Hybrid, Parallel Hybrid and Regenerative Braking. You don't need to manage any of it though, the system reads the road and makes the call. The C9 SHS is on a different level entirely: 3 electric motors, AWD, 440 kW and 915 Nm, with a verified 0-100 km/h time of 4.9 seconds. That's hot hatchback pace in a full-sized family SUV.
3. Premium tech that's standard, not optional
The J7 SHS comes with adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, forward collision warning, blind spot detection and a 540° HD panoramic camera. Add in a 14.8-inch touchscreen, heads-up display, Sony Premium Sound System, wireless charging and more and you're looking at a pretty impressive package. Not to be sneezed at either, the C9 SHS brings flagship-level luxury: premium cabin materials, Level 2 driver assistance and 20-inch alloy wheels.
4. The warranty takes long-term risk off the table
Both the JAECOO J7 SHS and OMODA C9 SHS come with a 10-year/1 000 000 km engine warranty for the first owner and a 10-year battery pack warranty with unlimited kilometres. The J7 SHS adds a 7-year/200 000 km factory warranty, 5-year roadside assist and a 5-year/75 000 km service plan. The C9 matches that with a 7-year factory warranty and its own 7-year service plan. When fuel costs are unpredictable, having your ownership costs locked in is not a small thing
5. So, is it time to make the switch?
Every time fuel goes up, the payback case for a plug-in hybrid gets shorter. The J7 SHS and C9 SHS are fully specified, capable SUVs that happen to run mostly on electricity for anyone who charges regularly. The petrol engine is there when you need it. Most days, you won't. It's the best of both worlds.
